Kawakawa – Macropiper excelsum subsp. excelsum History Kawakawa Micropiper excelsum subsp.excelsum is found in coastal low land forests of North Island and upper half of the South Island of New Zealand. This is a native New Zealand Herb.  There are two other species Macropiper excelsum psittacorum is found on the Kermedec islands and Macropiper Melchior on The Three Kings Islands.
